Membership Policies & Special Circumstances
ASLA is committed to supporting our members through every stage of their careers. Below you will find our policies regarding cancellations, refunds, and special membership statuses designed to accommodate changing professional and personal circumstances. Membership Cancellation & Refund Policy
- Refund Eligibility: Membership cancellation requests received more than 30 days after the start of your annual membership cycle are not eligible for a refund. ASLA recognizes that exceptional circumstances may occur; such requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and refunds will be granted at ASLA’s sole discretion.
- How to Request: All requests must be submitted via email to Member Services and must include your ASLA Member ID.
- Third-Party Payments: Memberships paid by a third party (e.g., an employer or firm) are not eligible for a refund to the individual member.
- Refund Method: Approved refunds will be issued via the original form of payment.
- Installment Plan Modifications: Members enrolled in monthly installment plans must maintain the original selection of membership components for the duration of the annual cycle. Line-item removals (e.g., chapters or other products) are not permitted mid-cycle.
- Returned Payments: All returned payments are subject to a $30 processing fee.
Special Circumstances & Financial Hardship
ASLA offers several options for members facing transitions or hardships. Retired and semi-retired members, or those facing financial difficulties, may request a waiver or apply for reduced membership dues. This includes circumstances such as:
- Financial hardship or unemployment/partial employment
- Medical disability
To Apply: Please submit a written request to ASLA Member Services including your ASLA Member ID and a brief explanation of your situation. All requests are subject to approval.
Membership Status Options
Emeritus Status
Full Members with twenty-five (25) or more years of continuous membership may apply for Emeritus status if they are of age to collect full Social Security retirement benefits and are fully retired from active practice.
- Benefits: Emeritus Fellows and Full members are exempt from national and chapter dues.
- Privileges: All benefits and privileges of membership continue, with the exception of a Landscape Architecture Magazine subscription.
- Effective Date: Status becomes effective upon receipt of a completed application and verification of eligibility by ASLA Member Services.
Limited Status
Full Members with fifteen (15) or more years of continuous membership may apply for Limited Status if they are working twenty-five (25) hours per week or less.
- Dues: Members granted Limited Status pay Society and applicable chapter dues at one-half (1/2) the Full Member rate.
- Effective Date: Status becomes effective upon verification of eligibility by ASLA Member Services.
Temporary Limited Status
Full and Associate Members may apply for Temporary Limited Status if they are pursuing an additional degree as full-time students at an accredited college or university.
- Dues: Members pay national and applicable chapter dues at one-half (1/2) the applicable member rate.
- Effective Date: Status becomes effective upon verification of eligibility by ASLA Member Services.
- Renewal: This status is effective for one (1) membership year and may be renewed annually with proof of continued eligibility.
Waiver of Dues
In cases of significant hardship, disability, or other special considerations, a full waiver of dues may be granted.
- Requirements: Members must submit a written request to ASLA Member Services detailing their circumstances.
- Chapter Support: The request must be accompanied by written support from the member's Chapter President.
