• Sutter Regional Shoreline Park Pier / AECOM
  
  In an era where aging infrastructure is terming-out across our country, the Sutter Regional Shoreline Park Pier demonstrates how the funds earmarked for decommissioning old structures can be better spent modifying them to provide social, ecological and economic benefits. When the new eastern span of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge opened to the public over the 2013 Labor Day weekend, demolition of the original east span began almost immediately, starting with the removal of the above-water steel superstructure and followed by the implosion of the marine foundations. Learn how to work with large government entities as was the case with this project, CalTrans.
• Highland Hospital Courtyard / Keller Mitchell/Cupples Keller Design
  
  What does it take to transform an almost century-old hospital complex into a state-of-the-art facility capable of functioning almost entirely off the grid for 72 hours? It requires time, funds, patience, and trust. Patience was an imperative because the hospital had to remain fully operational during construction. At the end of 2019, the design-build team of Clark Construction, SmithGroup, and Keller Mitchell & Company delivered on their contract – and on the trust built with the County of Alameda and the Alameda Health System - by turning over the last phase of a 10-year, $668-million labor of love – the new Highland Hospital.
