ASLA Works with Climate Committee on Policy Recommendations

At the beginning of this Congress, the U.S. House of Representatives created a new Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. Congress charged this committee with creating policy recommendations on how to best address the climate crisis and achieve substantial and permanent reductions in pollution and other contributors to climate change. The committee will include its final recommendations in a comprehensive report due by the end of March 2020.

ASLA applauded the creation of this important committee as a testament to the House’s commitment to finding solutions to the devastation of climate change. ASLA Government Affairs has met with Committee staff and shared with them the important work done by landscape architects on adaptation, mitigation, and resilience.

Therefore, when the committee solicited policy recommendations, ASLA sent a letter asking them to include the policy recommendations contained in ASLA’s Smart Policies for Changing Climate report. The letter also asked that the committee require the use of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions as a cost-efficient and highly effective tool in combatting the climate crisis. Lastly, in keeping with ASLA’s policies and values, ASLA urged the committee to ensure that its final report recommends policies that address environmental justice, equity, and inclusion.

ASLA will continue working with the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis to promote strong policies that address climate change and also highlight the critical work of landscape architects in combating this global catastrophe.
