The ASLA State Chapters for Upstate New York, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, along with the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, invite you to attend the 2026 Great Lakes Region Climate Action Seminar. This event in the regional series continues to explore and expand landscape architecture’s role in addressing climate change impacts across urban and natural systems in the Great Lakes Region.
The theme for the 2026 seminar is Disaster & Refuge in the Great Lakes: Preparing for Vulnerability and Possibility in the Climate Crisis. Programming will examine how climate-driven disasters, displacement, and migration are reshaping landscapes and communities, while also highlighting opportunities for proactive design, policy, and advocacy that strengthen regional resilience.
The seminar will feature cross-disciplinary perspectives from landscape architects, planners, designers, researchers, and allied professionals working at the forefront of climate adaptation and resilience. Sessions will focus on community-centered strategies, regional planning frameworks, and design approaches that address risk, recovery, and long-term transformation in the face of a changing climate.
This virtual event is supported by an ongoing national initiative to connect regional chapters and university programs in meaningful dialogue and action. The seminar seeks to elevate subject matter experts from across the Great Lakes Region to help develop regional climate action networks and implementable strategies that reflect the shared ecological, cultural, and economic systems of the region.
The seminar is open to professionals, students, educators, and advocates committed to climate action and resilience. By participating, attendees will gain practical insights, expand professional networks, and contribute to a growing regional movement advancing climate responsive landscape architecture and collective action.
