April Westcott, FASLA, exemplifies allegiance and service to ASLA, with the intent of building a bigger tent for all to have a place within the organization. Whether it is introducing the profession to students, promoting awareness of landscape architecture to the public or strengthening outreach to members, April has selflessly devoted herself through decades of intense service, acting as the conduit between people, organizations, the profession and public.
A 1995 BLA graduate of Ball State University, April practiced in the field of landscape architecture (design-build and commercial design) for over 25 years giving her insight as a practitioner. Within the Indiana Chapter, April was chair of six committees, Vice-President and President. April was a representative and speaker at three National Public Awareness Summits.
As a Professor of Landscape Architecture at Ball State, April elevates the profession daily. She is a role model for student engagement including being Advisor to NOMA (National Organization of Minority Architects) students. This reinforces her commitment to ASLA’s directive for emerging professionals and affirms her understanding of this critical demographic. The programming she has helped create nationally finds its audience in her classroom.
April received the 2020 Ball State Outstanding Alumni Award, the 2019 ASLA Outstanding Service Award, 2019 Clair Bennett Legacy Award, and elevated to the Council of Fellows in 2022.
