Discover one-of-a-kind works of art and rare books at The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s fundraiser.
A cadre of renowned artists, landscape architects, architects, and others have generously contributed original works of art and rare books to The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Twenty-second Annual Silent Auction. As in past years, the auction is being held exclusively online; bidding started September 14 and will end on September 30. The auction catalogue is a must-see, with beautiful images and detailed information about the over 80 pieces, accompanied by insightful and inspiring artist statements and biographies.

Each year TCLF’s silent auction is held in conjunction with the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture. To reflect this year’s conference location, Los Angeles, California, there was an effort to include local artists. For example, Los Angeles-based artist Christine Atkinson donated a photograph—one of just two editions of the original image—depicting the peaceful end that a snowstorm brought to a wildfire raging in Los Angeles’s San Gabriel Mountains last year. Jaime Coffey, another Los Angeles-based artist, is contributing Moon Snake, an original egg tempera on clayboard painting depicting a Southern California desert nightscape.
As she does each year, Angela D. Dye, FASLA, has contributed a hand-dyed silk chiffon batik that pays homage to the city hosting the ASLA Conference. This year’s exquisite creation depicts the agricultural bounty that Southern California is known for, including avocados, oranges, chilies, and garlic, floating atop an ocean blue background.
One of the highlights of this year’s auction is two signed works by famed Brazilian landscape architect Robert Burle Marx (1909–1994). One of the pieces—Mutamba—has already been sold (courtesy of the auction’s “Buy Now” feature), but Mutamba II is still open for bidding.
Other popular items include Eight Posts, Rumoi, Hokkaido, Japan, 2004, an entrancing silver gelatin print by English artist Michael Kenna, known for his long-exposure landscape photographs that capture the interaction between the natural and the manmade, as well as Red Meadow, an oil painting by landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, FASLA.
Additional participants include Mimi McKay, Ellyn Zimmerman, H. Keith Wagner, and Russell Hart.
This year also features an outstanding collection of antique books that every landscape design history buff would envy, including an 1867 edition of Histoire Des Jardins by Arthur Mangin and English Pleasure Gardens by Rose Standish Nichols, published in 1902. Donated by Steven Koch, each is richly illustrated with detailed engravings of mythical and historical gardens.
