Production Manager

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the national professional association for landscape architects, representing more than 15,000 members. Landscape architects lead the planning, design, and stewardship of healthy, equitable, safe, and resilient environments. Landscape architecture includes both iconic and neighborhood places, including commercial developments, streetscapes, green roofs, parks, civic spaces, memorials, and residential communities. The Society’s mission is to advance landscape architecture through advocacy, communication, education, and fellowship.

ASLA is recruiting for a Production Manager to serve as a project manager for monthly print production, mailing, and advertising traffic for Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM) and all ASLA printed pieces. 

 Responsibilities:

      Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM):
  • Traffics monthly LAM advertising materials ensuring timely receipt and review. Reviews ad materials for resolution, size, and content; proofs ad pages for publication; and prepares monthly buyer’s guide and display indexes as well as yearly Product Directory.
  • Prepares and manages production schedules with multiple vendors and determines sales and editorial deadlines
  • Acts as a point person between staff and service providers throughout the prepress, print production, and monthly distribution process. Acts as a liaison between outside vendors, advertisers, and LAM staff.
  • Monitors and manages production budget allocations; solicits estimates for special advertising supplements; and codes invoices.
  • Leads an audit of the magazine’s sustainability/impact regarding production, printing, and mailing.
      ASLA Printed Pieces:
  • Organizes, controls, and monitors the flow of all ASLA printed pieces from start to finish (solicits estimates, creates schedules, confirms specifications, coordinates artwork with designers, final sign off of files and proofs, etc.).
  • Interacts with ASLA staff to advise on printing options/solutions to meet their needs.
  • Collaborates with Marketing Manager to ensure deadlines are met. Acts as a liaison between Marketing Manager and printing vendors.
  • Maintains and archives records of each job, including native files and samples, for all completed projects.
  • Maintains on-going vendor relationships and cultivates new vendor relationships.

Qualifications: 

  • BA or BS degree in Communications, Graphic Design, or other creative field.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in magazine publishing, including prepress, print production, mailing, and fulfillment.
  • Knowledge of design principles (layout, typography, color, balance, etc.) is essential.
  • Thorough understanding of the creative process and can understand and speak to technical print requirements.
  • Expert level knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, and Microsoft Word and Excel in both a PC and Mac environment.
  • Strong project and scheduling management skills; ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines; work well under pressure
  • Excellent organizational skills, quality control, and attention to detail.
