The interface between anthropogenic and evolved systems requires dissolving boundaries and erasing hierarchies within human and nonhuman agents. To do this, landscape architects must develop new tools and methodologies that engage computation and construction to form tighter connections between culture and biology. This talk will explore these boundaries and hierarchies through the physical and cultural definitions of wilderness in the context of new technologies that enable local and remote sensing, long-term monitoring, and machine intelligence.

Recognized as one of the leading researchers working in the areas of computation and environmental and ecological design, Bradley Cantrell brings together emergent technologies and landscape processes. His work in the area of Intelligent Wilds was recently featured in “Ecology on Autopilot,” in the June 2017 issue of Landscape Architecture Magazine. His books include Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture, Modeling the Environment, and, with Justine Holzman, Associate ASLA, Responsive Landscapes.

Gareth Doherty is an assistant professor of landscape architecture and senior research associate at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he is also director of the master in landscape architecture program. He is the author of Paradoxes of Green: Landscapes of a City-State, published in 2017 by the University of California Press. Previous publications include Is Landscape…? Essays on the Identity of Landscape, edited with Charles Waldheim (Routledge, 2016), and Ecological Urbanism, edited with Mohsen Mostafavi (Lars Müller Publishers, 2010, revised in 2016). Doherty is a founding editor of the New Geographies journal and editor-in-chief of New Geographies 3: Urbanisms of Color. His latest book, Landscape as Art and Ecology: Lectures by Roberto Burle Marx, is forthcoming from Lars Müller Publishers.

Alpa Nawre is Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at University of Florida, and Partner at her design practice, Alpa Nawre Design. She is a recipient of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture Award for Excellence in Design Studio Teaching, the Dumbarton Oaks Mellon Fellowship in Urban Landscape Studies, and is a current Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Fellow for Innovation and Leadership. She holds a Masters degree in Urban Design from Harvard Graduate School of Design, a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University, and a Bachelor in Architecture from NIT, Raipur, India. She has worked internationally in design offices in India, USA, UAE and Switzerland and serves on the editorial board of JAE, the Journal of Architectural Education.

On May 17, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) will officially open the ASLA Center for Landscape Architecture on 636 Eye Street NW, Washington, D.C.
