Senior Graphic Designer

LAM is seeking a Senior Graphic Designer to join a dynamic small team in producing one of the design profession’s longest-running and most-admired publications. As the second-in-command to the magazine’s art director, the Senior Graphic Designer will collaborate with editorial to produce the monthly print magazine as well as design and adapt assets for a forthcoming online publication.

The ideal candidate excels at print design and moves easily between roles as a team player and independent creative, possesses excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, and has a depth of knowledge of the publishing and production processes.

Department Summary
Founded in 1910, Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM) is the award-winning monthly magazine of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). It is the magazine of record for the landscape architecture profession in North America, reaching more than 60,000 readers who plan and design projects valued at more than $140 billion each year. ASLA’s mission is to empower members to design a sustainable and equitable world through landscape architecture.

Responsibilities
• Works closely with the LAM art director on every phase of the magazine’s production, from image selection through final proofs and prepress.
• Acts as the design lead on specific sections of the magazine, including but not limited to image selection, layout, production, and prepress.
• Color-corrects, manipulates, and formats images including plans, photographs, renderings, and diagrams for use in magazine layouts, the LAM website, and social media outlets as needed.
• Works collaboratively with editorial team to ensure that the highest journalistic and design standards are upheld.
• Develops graphic assets for the online version of the magazine each month, and make sure they are delivered to the web editor on time.
• Oversees, with the production editor, the trafficking of high-resolution images, credits and rights, and additional materials as needed.

Qualifications
• BFA or BA in design, journalism, environmental studies, landscape architecture, or related field. Degree, coursework, or experience in planning, horticulture, or environmental design is a plus.
• A minimum three years of professional experience in design for print publication required. Experience in graphic design for web, video production for web, and social media a plus. Experience in management and working with associations is preferred. Strong sense of design: strong layout, typography and graphics standards.
• Expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams), and familiarity with Basecamp, Zoom, and Slack.
• Excellent organizational skills, good judgment, communication skills, and attention to detail.
• Experience balancing a complex workload with short and long-term project deadlines, addressing changing priorities.
• Flexibility and the ability to work well under pressure.
