In Memoriam: Richard Powell, FASLA

For over three decades, Richard Powell, FASLA, former ASLA Trustee and Finance Committee Chair, served his profession, ASLA, and affiliated organizations with passion, energy, commitment and integrity, actively promoting the value of our profession, while piloting the profession to cherish our history, and mentoring the youth of our profession.

As a practitioner, Dick’s work was enormously influential in introducing the landscape architect’s perspective into sectors of public practice and transforming how we document environmental impacts in New York State long before it was common for landscape architects to be consulted in such areas. The NY Upstate Chapter of ASLA was proud to present him with the 2013 Distinguished Practitioner in Public Practice for his enormous efforts to expand the influence of landscape architects in protecting New York’s environment.

From the start of his career, Richard was essential in the development of his chapter’s operations, finances and programs, establishing a number of protocols which became the standard for the chapter. Dick was soon tapped to bring his abilities to the national level, serving as a two-term trustee and a long-time member and chair of several national committees. For his service as chair of the Finance Committee, he received one of ASLA’s first Outstanding Service Awards in 2013. Dick was inducted into the Council of Fellows in 2014.
