The Architect's Newpaper: Outdoor Spaces Virtual Event

Join The Architect’s Newspaper on May 6th for Outdoor Spaces, a Landscape, Sustainability and Remediation Virtual Event. Earn 6 PDH, LA CES/HSW, AIA/HSW Credits!

This virtual one-day conference features national leaders in landscape architecture and design presenting recent projects and discussions on how the relationship to outdoors spaces has changed in light of the pandemic, the urgencies of climate change, the need for new public spaces, and the drive to create healthier and engaged connections to our landscapes.

Here are some of the themes we'll explore at our virtual event:

  • Reinventing the Commons: Public Squares and Amenities Now
  • Wilderness at Home: The Future of Regional Parks
  • Putting Equity in the Urban Landscape
  • The Past is Present is Future: Memorial Design
  • Facing the Water: Riverside Reclamation

Our first panel will explore topics such as how Civic and Public Spaces have taken on new importance as open spaces for discourse. During the past two years the design of truly public spaces has taken a front-and-center place in the public that demands access for both enjoyment and expression.

The second panel will discuss: how do we create lasting memories of persons and events marked in the landscape. With these design leaders’ approach to designing beautiful, thoughtful and thought-provoking spaces, how do we shift the conversations of memorialization into the living present spaces of our memories?

The last panel includes a lively conversation on significant river-adjacent projects that address the deep cultural and ecological issues of each site: Focusing on the Origin Park, a 650+ acre reclamation site on the Ohio River and The Bowtie, a former railyard on the Los Angeles River. Addressing restoration strategies and community-based approaches, each of these projects are transforming industrial land into vibrant, green open spaces with a program of conservation, education, and recreational opportunities.
