Nature of the Position: The Government Affairs Coordinator provides administrative and logistical support for the State and Federal Government Affairs team and ensures the smooth functioning of the team, including maintaining processes, systems, communications, and information tailored to the unique needs of this team. In addition to the specific requirements listed below, the Coordinator should possess a high work standard, the ability to learn quickly, and be adept at setting priorities and anticipating needs.

  • Monitors, tracks, researches, and reports on legislative issues and actions for state and federal government affairs initiatives through review of CQ Bill Tracking and GovHawk, testimony, hearings, floor debates, and bills on the state and federal levels. This work may also include Internet research, reviewing newspapers, and online services for items of interest.
  • Prepares, reviews, and edits legislative updates for internal and external communications (LAND, Advocacy News, E-Express, etc.).
  • Coordinates and administers grassroots communications on state and federal legislative issues through the ASLA iAdvocate Network, social media, and other grassroots tools. Keeps up with new developments and trends in eAdvocacy.
  • Runs reports, updates spreadsheets, and maintains precise records on iAdvocate Network – including message analytics.
  • Maintains government affairs web pages to ensure timely, accurate information in coordination with Communications Department.
  • Assists in meeting management including, developing and preparing materials, sending invitations, coordinating logistics, and other associated tasks for events such as conference calls, webinars, Advocacy Day, Advocacy Summit, and ASLA Annual and Mid-year meetings.
  • Assists staff with special projects.
  • Works in partnership with department supervisor and other ASLA staff and volunteers to advance the Society’s mission, strategic objectives, and priority issues.  
  • Upholds the ASLA values and culture.  
  • Participates in ASLA-related activities and meetings and performs other duties as assigned.
 

Preferred Background/Experience

Education:  BA or BS degree.

Skills: Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, work calmly under tight deadlines, juggle multiple tasks, organize time effectively, conduct research, and identify resources for projects. Must be self-disciplined to meet deadlines and have a strong work ethic. Must have excellent written and oral communications skills. Proven ability to frame and draft cogent written messages. Experience writing, specifically for advocacy campaigns. High attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger picture, conscientious approach to work, and the ability to anticipate needs and be proactive. Monitors and double-checks work and information for accuracy and quality. Demonstrated experience using social media networks and supporting successful online advocacy campaigns for online audiences and policy makers. Knowledge of state and federal government processes. Knowledge of landscape architecture, design, planning, and/or environmental issues is a plus. Understanding of nonprofit governance structure preferred. Team player. Able to work in groups to meet goals. Understands organizational structures and is able to work effectively through administrative systems. Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of Office and word processing software and electronic calendars (Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) is required. Ability to quickly learn software specific to the department. 

Experience: Minimum two-to-three years of experience in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
