AI in Practice: Professional Survey Findings from Landscape Architects in North America / H Braiden, B Chamberlain, BH George, P Fernberg / Journal of Digital Landscape Architecture, 626-633, 2025.
In 2025, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architects released the results of their joint 2023-2024 AI survey, led by researchers from both countries. It contained insights from over 700 respondents in the landscape architecture field, representing various firm types. The findings show that 55% of participants already use AI in practice, teaching, or research, utilizing tools such as chatbots, image generators, language processing, and computer vision. Most non-users plan to adopt AI in the near future.
Since that initial survey, AI development and adoption have accelerated, introducing new tools, platforms, and challenges. New ethical concerns have also arisen regarding the use of AI. It is crucial to revisit these topics with broader questions reflecting today’s digital landscape. Additionally, the original survey primarily targeted North Americans; to gain a more comprehensive understanding of global views, a wider international response is necessary.
The CSLA, ASLA, and International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) are launching an improved survey to reflect current AI capabilities and encompass diverse cultural and regional contexts. We will repeat this survey every few years to track long-term adoption and use. Your input is vital for understanding the impact of AI on landscape architecture worldwide.
