Launched earlier this year, Groundwork provides a platform for ASLA members to share firsthand experiences from climate-related disasters and to reflect on the evolving role of landscape architects in post-disaster planning, policy, and design. The series brings together practitioners from diverse regions to discuss what recovery looks like on the ground—and how the profession can lead in building stronger, more adaptive communities.

Today’s session will highlight stories from across the Midwest and Great Plains, where landscape architects are contending with both sudden and long-simmering challenges. Disasters in the region include flooding, tornadoes, derechos, drought, and extreme storm events, often playing out against a backdrop of rural disinvestment, aging infrastructure, and complex recovery systems.

Panelists will share candid reflections on the realities of practice in the region—from securing resources and navigating policy barriers to designing for long-term adaptation in communities with deep histories and limited capacity.
