Tour Frederick Law Olmsted's Buffalo

Join the Olmsted Network for a series of expert-led tours through Frederick Law Olmsted’s Buffalo, NY, on Oct 30-Nov 1. We’ll explore the Richardson-Olmsted Campus, the Buffalo park system, Niagara Falls USA and more. Landscape architects can earn up to 5 LA CES credits.

Explore Buffalo like never before, with a Halloween stay in The Richardson Hotel and exclusive tours of the Richardson Olmsted Campus, the nationally recognized Buffalo park system, Niagara Falls USA and more.

After being welcomed to Buffalo with a presentation of the city’s rich history and a special dinner in the Glessner Room of The Richardson Hotel, snuggle up in your room at the former Buffalo State Asylum. Known today as the Richardson Olmsted Campus, the building and landscape are considered one of Buffalo’s most important sites, and its history brings together the stories of four great men: Henry Hobson Richardson, Frederick Law Olmsted, Calvert Vaux and Thomas Story Kirkbride.

We'll hear about the campus’ many lives and its adaptive reuse as a hotel, conference center and public green space on our in-depth tour with Richardson Olmsted Campus President Paris Roselli and historic preservation architect Clinton Brown. The tour will include information about the 2013 restoration of the South Lawn, which was part of Olmsted and Vaux’s original design for the hospital grounds, as well as the site’s Olmsted trees and Kirkbride plan.

In the late morning, we’ll take a trolley tour of Forest Lawn Cemetery before enjoying a picnic lunch with the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and a bus tour with local guide Lauren Becker. The day will end with a memorable buffet dinner at The Terrace on Delaware, which overlooks Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park.

On Friday, the Olmsted Network is offering guest the chance to visit the American side of Niagara Falls with Mark Mistretta, Niagara Region Director of New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. After a 30-minute trolley ride to the Niagara Falls USA Visitor’s Center, we’ll learn about Olmsted’s Free Niagara initiative and Olmsted and Vaux’s design for the site. Our journey will conclude with a visit to Cave of the Winds.
