Nature of the Position:  Coordinates public outreach activities and communications with print, electronic, and online media to promote ASLA and raise the visibility of the landscape architecture profession at both the national and chapter levels.

  • Coordinates public relations and media outreach for ASLA’s 48 chapters in line with national efforts.
  • Coordinates outbound, regular communication and promotion via media outreach, social media platforms, member newsletters, and other vehicles to advance ASLA and the profession.
  • Plans and maintains chapter news calendar, coordinating with chapter public relations chairs, department director, LAND editor, public relations manager, and other staff as appropriate.
  • Writes news releases, fact sheets, web content, and other related materials to help promote ASLA and the landscape architecture profession.
  • Maintains chapter media/outreach lists. Manages distribution of chapter news releases via ASLA media lists and wire distribution accounts (as appropriate).  Follows up with key contacts to maximize coverage.
  • Maintains and updates expert database to provide media with authoritative sources for stories and chapters with possible speakers for events.
  • Serves as chapter point person for National Landscape Architecture Month and the Public Awareness Summit, among other events.
  • Monitors ASLA media coverage and distributes selected clippings to ASLA staff and national and chapter leaders to demonstrate coverage and build morale.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:  BA degree in journalism, English, communications, or related field.

Skills:  Excellent verbal, written, computer, and interpersonal communications skills.  Well organized with attention to detail.  Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.  Strong Microsoft Office skills; experience with Adobe products, media contact and tracking software, social media platforms, multimedia executions, and basic HTML programming helpful.  Must develop a broad knowledge of the landscape architecture profession and its practitioners; background in the profession, sustainable design, urban planning, conservation, environmental policy a plus.

Experience:  Minimum two years’ experience in public relations, marketing, media, media relations, or related field.
