Dan Kiley Exhibition to Tour the Country

The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley has fast become a very popular exhibition, attracting coverage from The New York Times, World Landscape Architecture, Land8, HyperAllergic, and many other outlets. The exhibition, which features 45 newly commissioned photographs of 27 of Kiley’s more than 1,000 designed landscapes, is currently on view at the National Building Museum (NBM) through May 18, 2014, and despite several snow-related closures, it has had a steady stream of visitors since opening day. ASLA helped sponsor the NBM exhibit as part of its activities for the upcoming National Landscape Architecture Month (NLAM) this April.

Also in conjunction with the exhibition and NLAM, on April 23, NBM will host Spotlight on Design: Reed Hilderbrand and the Legacy of Dan Kiley. Douglas Reed, FASLA, and Gary Hilderbrand, FASLA, founding principals of Watertown, Massachusetts-based Reed Hilderbrand, the 2013 recipient of the ASLA’s Firm Award, will discuss their current work in a presentation introduced by Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, founder and president of The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF), which organized The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley. Tickets are available on the museum’s website.

After Washington, D.C., the exhibition travels to three Indiana venues: the Indianapolis Central Library, Indianapolis, May 29-June 25; Indiana University Center for Art + Design, Columbus, the city in which Kiley’s Miller House and Garden is located, July 11-August 1; and, Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, August 12-September 14. The exhibition will continue on to Pittsburgh through the balance of 2014. Details can be found on TCLF’s website. In the coming weeks 2015 exhibition dates will be announced. Discussions are currently underway with sites in Chicago, New York City, St. Louis, and elsewhere.

The Kiley exhibition is part of TCLF’s Landslide® program – Landscape Architecture Magazine is the media sponsor, ASLA is the educational partner, and Victor Stanley and The Davey Tree Expert Company are presenting sponsors.
