Oregon Health and Science University

The Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) campus shares Marqum Hill (also know as Pill Hill) with Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, and the Portland VA Medical Center, making it one of Portland densest areas. But within this urban campus are two roof gardens that show how nature can heal.

Our modern healthcare environments are intimidating, stressful places for anyone, but particularly for the staff who work there. Providing easily-accessible gardens that are safe and welcoming is critical to making healthcare facilities healthier places.

Two roof terraces located on the southeast side of building are terraced into the façade of the building. The upper terrace, which is easy to access from the Portland’s Aerial Tram, is a pleasant shade garden with many trees and ample places to sit and take a break. The garden has numerous sculptures and interesting features, such as stone benches and drinking fountains.

The lower garden is designed for children and their families to explore. Curving tile benches meander through the garden. Sculptures wait to be discovered and encourage play. These gardens provide healing elements intended for staff, patients, families and the public visiting the hillside campus.

The OHSU campus was designed by architects Perkins + Will and landscape architects Murase Associates.
