Pearl District Park Sequence

The Pearl District park sequence comprises, from south to north, Jamison Square, Tanner Springs Park, and The Fields Neighborhood Park. The Pearl District was know as the site near Portland's Union Station and home to old railroad yards, derelict port factories, abandoned warehouses, and light industry. In the 1990s, city planners designated the district as a new "town-in-town," to be developed at high density with a projected population of 12,000. The goal was to retain elements of the area’s historic character while building anew, a highly sustainable approach that renews a city's historic assets. The city preserved loading docks and cobbled street; repurposed old buildings into lofts, shops, restaurants, and coffee shops; added low- and high-rise housing; and threaded the streetcar line through the district.

As redevelopment progressed, the city implemented an innovative open-space plan designed by landscape architects Peter Walker & Associates. Inspired by the city’s historic Park Blocks, the water-themed sequence of four park areas contains two square blocks, a larger recreational area, and a waterfront park, united by a continuous walkway.
