Ecotrust / Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center

An iconic leader in Portland's green movement, the Natural Capital Center is the first historic renovation in the U.S. to earn a LEED Gold rating. Additionally, it became the first LEED Gold building in the Pacific Northwest.

Originally constructed as a warehouse in 1895, the building was purchased by Ecotrust in 1998 with the help of philanthropist Jean Vollum. Thoughtfully reclaiming, recycling, and re-purposing a tremendous amount of the original materials, the Natural Capital Center opened in 2001 as a center for the exchange of ecologically and socially responsible ideas, goods, and services. A mixed-use project containing retail, office, and event space, the center is now home to Patagonia, the Certified Forest Products Council, The Wild Salmon Center, EcoTrust, and other like-minded organizations.

Holst Architecture led this innovative renovation project and Nevue Ngan designed the sustainable site improvements.
