In Memoriam: Benjamin W. Gary (1931–2021)

Benjamin W. Gary, FASLA, Past President of the American Society of Landscape Architects 

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Benjamin was the son of the late Benjamin W. Gary, Sr. and Annie May (Lafoon) Gary. Raised and educated in Richmond, Benjamin earned his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, and earned his master’s degree in landscape architecture from Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.

Benjamin’s excitement with and devotion to the profession was an essential aspect of his life. In his early career, he taught design, plant materials, and landscape construction at Harvard to ambitious students, giving back to the community that inspired him throughout his life. For the past 65 years, Ben was the president, owner, and operator of the prestigious landscape architecture firm, the former Moriece & Gary of Cambridge, currently Marshall Gary of Danvers. A proud yet humble man, Ben was president of ASLA from 1976-77 and inducted as a Fellow of the Society in 1977. He was also the first president of Danvers Educational Enrichment Partnership (DEEP).
