Healthy Communities: Integrating Urban Design and Public Health- 1.0 PDH (LA CES/HSW)

Tuesday, October 23, 2019
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Eastern)

Fact: Urban design is fundamentally linked to physical, social, economic, and environmental health and well-being. But in what ways? To what extent? And how can landscape architects approach design through the lens of health equity?

Through case studies and ongoing academic research, this webinar will explore the connection between design and public health with a focus on strategies, design interventions, and approaches for cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the link between health and urban form.
  2. List the social, economic, and environmental benefits in integrating health in urban design.
  3. Identify strategies to collaborate with other disciplines in integrating health in urban design interventions.
  4. Identify design interventions that influence health.
  5. Explain one or more examples in the field that demonstrates the cross-collaborative nature in integrating public health and landscape architecture design.

OLIN LABS: Research and Design Technology in Practice - 1.0 PDH (LA CES/HSW)

Tuesday, October 29, 2019
2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Eastern)

OLIN Labs, the research and development group within OLIN, is a community of practice that focuses on five interdependent areas of inquiry: ecology, technology, construction, design, and people. Tech Lab is responsible for the development and stewardship of custom design technology and workflows for landscape architecture, from parametric design and visualization workflows to mapping, analysis, and communication.

Join OLIN Labs as they present the various modes in which OLIN designers and researchers work to develop, implement, and disseminate innovative tech solutions in our practice and beyond through: Education (which includes identification of needs and opportunities in our current practice and internal training), Development (the creation of new tools and methods to meet the needs of our practice), and Research (including external partnerships and primary research to create new knowledge in the realm of technology.) Case studies of current OLIN Labs initiatives will be used to exemplify these three levels of inquiry.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Measure software and tool usage in professional practice and evaluate needs and capacity for training and education.
  2. Assess the impact of creating new custom tools and methods to solve both unique and routine landscape design problems.
  3. Structure research into emerging trends in landscape architectural professional practice.
