ASLA Makes a Case for Landscape Architecture Alignment with STEM

STEM Education Coalition hosting their meeting at the ASLA Center for Landscape Architecture

On Wednesday, July 24, ASLA Career Discovery and Diversity hosted its first partner meeting with the STEM Education Coalition. The Coalition’s mission is to inform policymakers of the role science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education plays in keeping the United States as the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace.

The meeting introduced ASLA as a full member of the Coalition and raised awareness of landscape architecture as a STEM discipline. As a new partner of the Coalition, Education and Accreditation Director Kristopher Pritchard and Career Discovery and Diversity Manager Lisa J. Jennings presented an overview of ASLA and the profession, and explained the alignment of landscape architecture and STEM through a variety of projects by ASLA member institutions. Government Affairs Director Roxanne Blackwell led her staff in advising the education team in preparation for the discussion. The Coalition provided insight and guidance on the process to secure formal STEM designation.

The meeting concluded with a tour of ASLA’s Center for Landscape Architecture and green roof.
