Opportunities: ACS8 Utopia, Architecture, and Spirituality Symposium, New Harmony, Indiana

ASLA’s Opportunities and Events page provides users with the latest information on everything from conferences and meetings to calls for papers, requests for qualifications, consulting opportunities, and competitions. Below, a glimpse of utopia.

The eighth international Architecture, Culture, and Spirituality Symposium (ACS8) will take place June 23-26, 2016, in the historically significant, beautiful, and enchanting town of New Harmony, Indiana, USA.

ACS8 asks us to look at utopia as an idea and ideal, real and imagined, in all of its ramifications for architecture, landscape, and the built environment, culture, politics, and, especially, spirituality. We will reflect on utopias past, explore utopia in the present reality, and speculate on how designers can take up utopian ideas and action in the future.

New Harmony, Indiana, is about two-and-one-half hours drive from Saint Louis, and two hours from Louisville, Kentucky.

We kindly invite all individuals interested in participating in this event to submit a 500-1,000 word abstract. All work will be blind-peer reviewed by at least three separate scholars/practitioners. The submission deadline is Monday, January 18, 2016. Please visit the symposium website to learn about all the necessary details.

We hope you will consider joining us for what promises to be a unique meeting.

ACS8 co-chairs:

Ben Jacks (Miami University)
Nancy Mangum McCaslin (New Harmony, Indiana)
Ben Nicholson (School of the Art Institute of Chicago)
Michelangelo Sabatino (Illinois Institute of Technology)
