Opportunities: Staten Island Beachfronts RFEI

ASLA’s Opportunities and Events page provides users with the latest information on everything from conferences and meetings to calls for papers, requests for qualifications, consulting opportunities, and competitions. Below, a post-Sandy recovery project.

Start Date: November 22, 2013
End Date: January 21, 2014

NYC Parks and the New York Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning & Sustainability, have released a request for expressions of interest (RFEI) to enhance and re-invigorate Staten Island’s East and South Shores’ public beachfronts, open spaces, parks, and unprogrammed areas through new open space improvements, landscape planning, programming, amenities, services, events, sustainable design, and/or development, for temporary, seasonal, and/or permanent activations.

Staten Island’s miles of continuous public beachfront comprise one of the borough’s greatest natural and recreational assets and attract two to three million annual visitors to its many beaches, adjacent parks and fields, and open spaces offering swimming, fishing, boating, picnicking, boardwalks, promenades, bike lanes and other active and passive recreational opportunities.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated the shorefront and affected the economic recovery of nearby commercial corridors and communities. Successful submissions will leverage existing assets and generate new uses that will appeal to locals and visitors and accelerate economic recovery for the surrounding residential and business communities.
