Adjacent to the Mall and behind the Smithsonian Institution’s “Castle” building, the Enid A. Haupt Garden is a green oasis offering the public both shade and a rich array of colors, textures, and scents. A Victorian parterre forms the centerpiece of the composition, and its lush plantings and exotic potted plants reminds one of walking through an estate glass house filled with horticultural specimens. Jean Paul Carlhian's Moongate Garden, inspired by the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, was designed as an extension of the Sackler Gallery of Art, and his Fountain Garden, which references the gardens of the Alhambra palace in Spain, connects to the Museum of African Art. All three gardens form the roof of the building that houses these museum’s extensive collections.
