Open to the Public: Rethinking Security and Access in Public Space
Location: Naval Heritage Center
701 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, DC 20004
Date/Time: September, 24, 6:00 p.m.
Well-used and active public spaces are increasingly vulnerable to a variety of threats as we’ve seen with incidents in Berlin, Nice, London, Boston, and New York City. Outdoor spaces, which also often include cultural resources, accommodate more people, and host a greater variety of uses and programs. These range from urban parks that host regular events, to streets blocked off for a fair, or an entire area that transforms to accommodate a national celebration. It is essential to assess security-related issues against a variety of public space uses and understand the security-related risks these spaces face.
The Public Forum is from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., on September 24. This event will bring together design professionals, academics, planners, professional institutions, and security experts for a broad, inspirational conversation about security in the public realm and to discuss and share their experience, lessons learned, strategies, and best practices.
This event is presented by the National Capital Planning Commission in partnership with the American Society of Landscape Architects.
