Executive Committee Endorses Federal Priorities for the New Congress

2015-01-04
Recently, the ASLA Executive Committee endorsed the2015-2016 Federal Priorities Agenda, which will guide ASLA’s federal advocacy efforts for the 114th Congress. The committee approved an agenda that will focus the Society’s efforts on transportation planning and design, water and stormwater management, community design and development, and small business growth and development issues.

The committee’s endorsement completes a year-long process that began with a membership survey to learn what federal policies, regulations, and programs are important to landscape architects. The 2014 survey showed that transportation policies and programs are most important to a broad segment of the membership. Survey results also demonstrated that the ASLA membership accesses several federal transportation programs to plan and design projects across the country, including: Transportation Alternatives Program; Recreational Trails Program; Safe Routes to School; and TIGER grants. With the 114th Congress set to debate the reauthorization of the surface transportation law, MAP-21, ASLA will advocate on behalf of these key transportation programs.

ASLA members also responded that stormwater management legislation and programs and policies that help create more parks and recreational facilities were important to them and were significant to their employment opportunities. ASLA will continue its advocacy efforts in these policy areas and will work to support the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which survey respondents identified as a critical program for designing projects.

Small-business issues and demonstrating how landscape architecture techniques can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and help create resilient communities round out the agenda for the 114th Congress.
