President Obama’s Final State of the Union Highlights Infrastructure Successes

In his final State of the Union on Tuesday night, President Barack Obama highlighted the importance of a 21st century transportation system, and praised Congress for working together to pass the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act), legislation that will provide the nation with the means to rebuild aging infrastructure, protect our environment, and become more economically competitive. The FAST Act is a 5-year omnibus surface transportation bill that continues active transportation programs, like the Transportation Alternatives, Safe Routes to School, and Recreational Trails programs. With the passage of the FAST Act, landscape architects will continue to play a vital role in transportation planning going forward.

Additionally, President Obama reiterated the importance of supporting small business growth and development, one of ASLA’s priorities. “In this new economy, workers and startups and small businesses need more of a voice, not less. The rules should work for them,” stated Obama. He went on to applaud small business accomplishments of the past, but urged that there is more to be done. His administration will continue efforts to streamline federal regulatory burdens and provide online tools to help small businesses, like small landscape architecture firms and others.
