Type: Competitions / Awards

LA CES approved?: No

Location(s): International

Description: The ULI Hines Student Competition—entering its 18th year in 2020—offers graduate students the opportunity to form their own multidisciplinary teams and engage in a challenging exercise in responsible land use. Multidisciplinary teams of five students have two weeks to devise a development program for a real, large-scale site in a North American city. Teams provide graphic boards and narratives of their proposals including designs and market-feasible financial data for the site.

Students must register their team by December 13, 2019. Visit to register beginning in October. The first stage of the competition runs January 13 - 27, 2020. The jury will select finalist teams in February 2020.

Teams typically include students from the following disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, real estate development and finance, and economic development.

This is an ideas competition; there is no expectation that any of the submitted schemes will be applied to the site. The winning team receives $50,000 and the finalist teams each receive $10,000. One representative from each of the four finalist teams gets an all-expenses-paid site tour in the selected competition city in March 2020. All participating finalist students attend the all-expenses-paid final presentation in the host city in March 2020, where the jury selects the winning project.

Longtime ULI leader Gerald D. Hines, founder of the Hines real estate organization, created the competition with a generous endowment after winning the ULI J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development in 2002.
