Challenges at Contested Sites: Mississippi River and Fort Snelling

Date: 4/21/2018 - 4/21/2018

Type: Events

LA CES approved?: No

Location(s): US

Description: The confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, “Bdote” to Dakota people and the site of historic Fort Snelling, is arguably the richest and most contested historic landscape in Minnesota. This tour will explore sites owned and managed by federal, state, and local agencies, and will hear from Dakota people who consider this place their origin point on the earth. Challenges in historic site preservation, management, and interpretation will be reviewed from multiple, sometimes conflicting perspectives. Despite obstacles and historical distrust, efforts remain to create a just, inclusive, and sustainable future in this place.
