As an active member of ASLA, Susan has volunteered extensively at both the local and national level. Involvement in the Illinois Chapter includes serving as the Chapter Secretary, Newsletter Editor, President and Trustee. Susan was President when the State of Illinois passed its licensure law for landscape architects and the Chapter started publishing an annual magazine. She served on the steering committee for the Chicago Annual Meeting, and organized the Chapter's Centennial Medallion Program.

On a national level, Susan has been part of several committees and task forces, including the following:

  • Task Force on Chapter Relations in 1990.
  • Chair of the Chapter Presidents Council 1991-92.
  • Communications Committee 1991-96.
  • Finance Committee in 1996-97.
  • Fellows Executive Committee 1996-99.
  • Editorial and Publishing Committee 97-99.

She was also Vice-President for Communication 1997-99, and is currently on the Online Committee and the Ethics Committee.

Susan is the owner of Bartells/Jacobson Design, a private design firm in the suburban Chicago area. The firm specializes in public work, park and recreation design, and commercial landscape plans. Susan has a practical approach in her design work and enjoys working with people and personalizing her design results. The company often works with other consultants in a team approach for unique and resourceful designs. Ms. Jacobson has been a landscape architect since 1978 and is registered in Illinois. She worked in both the public and private sectors of landscape architecture before starting her own firm twelve years ago.

Susan has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana Campus. She became a full member of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1982, and was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1995.

In addition to Susan's volunteer work within the Society, she has also presented lectures for the Garden Clubs of Illinois, the University of Illinois Landscape Architecture Program, the Chicago Chapter of Women in Architecture, and several area schools. She has juried awards for the students at the University of Illinois, the Indiana Chapter, the Texas Chapter, and the Vermont Chapter. Susan also volunteers locally within her community in the school district, her church and the village government.
