Welcome to our Summer 2009 Urban Design Professional Practice Network Newsletter! This issue includes articles on green streets, art in the landscape, and a book about “Urban Design and the Bottom Line.”
Our New Name: Urban Design
I want to thank all members who voted on our PPN name change from
“Urban Planning and Design”, to simply “Urban Design”. Approximately 95% of the members who voted enthusiastically endorsed the name change. And although we have a new name, I am sure we will continue to discuss ‘urban planning’ related matters!
The ASLA National Meeting this past October in Philadelphia was full of interesting sessions - as usual. I was especially impressed with sessions regarding “Landscape Urbanism,” “Nature + Urbanism,” and others dealing with various aspects of sustainability. There were, however, BIG problems with the scheduling, location, and information sharing about the PPN meetings. Thanks again to the few who attended the Urban Planning and Design PPN meeting.
This year’s ASLA Annual Meeting in Chicago is going to be fantastic. If you are going, please plan on attending our PPN meeting
from 5:30 – 7:00 pm Sunday, September 20. Anyone up for socializing Friday or Saturday evening? Send me an e-mail and we will get something organized.
Our PPN membership is one of the largest within ASLA (over 1,000) and includes members from around the world. Have you checked out our web site? The “e-Networks” tool allows us to communicate with one another. Have a topic you would like to discuss with our group? e-Networks is for you.
Our group seeks submissions of short articles for inclusion in our upcoming newsletters. Anything from 1/2 page to 2 pages will work well. If you are interested, please fee free to contact me.
Looking forward to Chicago - and please feel free to contact me with any questions, issues, or concerns.
James Hencke, ASLA
