According to the American Society of Landscape Architects' Bylaws, Article 6, Section 629 "A Student Chapter, composed of individual Student Affiliates, may be chartered at educational institutions that (1) grant a degree in Landscape Architecture at the Baccalaureate or higher level and the professional program in Landscape Architecture is accredited by the Society; (2) grant a degree in Landscape Architecture at the Baccalaureate or higher level and the professional program in Landscape Architecture is endorsed by the sponsoring ASLA Chapter; or (3) grant a certificate of completion of a professional program in Landscape Architecture endorsed by the sponsoring ASLA Chapter and accepted by the State Licensing Board as satisfying the educational requirements for admission to the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) or other state licensing examination. The sponsoring ASLA Chapter shall submit a petition for chartering a Student Chapter to the National Executive Committee. Establishment of the Student Chapter shall be effective upon approval of the petition by the Executive Committee."

A Student Chapter shall undertake activities consistent with the Society's purpose in the advancement in education and skill in the art of landscape architecture and, to this end, shall be encouraged to participate in the affairs of the Society and the local Chapter, to communicate with other Student Chapters, and to ally themselves in common purposes through a national organization.
