ASLA SELECTS FORRESTER
CONSTRUCTION COMPANY AS GENERAL CONTRACTOR FOR GREEN ROOF
PROJECT
Construction To Start This
Week
Washington, DC, December 19, 2005---The
American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has chosen
Forrester Construction Company as the general contractor and
construction manager to build a green roof on its headquarters
building in downtown Washington, D.C. Construction of the
Society’s 3,300-square-foot green roof located at 636
Eye Street, NW, is scheduled to begin in late December and
last approximately 18 weeks. The dedication ceremony is scheduled
for Earth Day, April 22, 2006.
"Forrester's appreciation of landscape architecture
and demonstrated commitment to sustainability were key factors
in their selection to construct ASLA's green roof," said
Nancy Somerville, executive vice president of ASLA. "Their
experience in working with not-for-profit organizations and--frankly--their
enthusiasm for the message this project conveys make them
the right contractor to complete our team."
The landscape architect and lead designer for the green roof
project is Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates, Inc., of
New York; Conservation Design Forum is the consulting landscape
architect; and, the architect is DMJM.
“We believe this state-of-the-art green roof will serve
as a demonstration project for the region and for the landscape
architecture, architecture, engineering, and construction
professions,” said D. Scott Forrester, principal of
Forrester Construction. “Our company is committed to
sustainable construction practices and we have a great deal
of experience in working on LEED-certified projects. On a
personal note, it gives me great pride to have been selected
to build the ASLA green roof because I have a degree in landscape
architecture and it’s something I care deeply about.”
A green roof is a roof substantially covered with vegetation.
Since the 1970’s, green roofs have increasingly become
part of the European landscape, where there are over 100 million
square feet of planted roofs today. Faced with soaring and
unpredictable energy costs and the desire for higher performance
buildings, more U.S. building owners are opting for green
roof technology. The ASLA project will serve as a demonstration
project for the city of Washington and beyond, encouraging
more widespread use locally and nationally.
