Site Design Approach for Creating Safe Environments |

| This session will explore the New York City Housing Authority’s
site improvements in 350 housing developments over the past 20 years.
Much of this work involved designing the open spaces of the developments
to create a more secure and safe housing environment – without
relying on fences or barriers that would isolate the development from
the surrounding community. Not surprisingly, these same techniques,
elements and strategies can be applied to the new emphasis on security
design to thwart the threats of terrorism. The session concludes with
examples that demonstrate how landscape architects are uniquely positioned
to combine good design with enhanced security, proving that these
two goals need not be mutually exclusive. |
