Candidacy status is an accreditation classification granted to any program that is in the planning or early stages of development or an intermediate stage of program implementation. This accreditation classification provides evidence to the educational institution, licensing bodies, and the public that at the time of evaluation, the developing education program appears to have the potential for meeting the standards set forth in the requirements for a landscape architecture program accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board. The purpose of candidacy is to establish stable, constructive, ongoing, and helpful partnerships between LAAB and institutions working toward becoming accredited. Programs designated as “candidates” have voluntarily committed to work toward LAAB accreditation. Candidacy status signifies that the program is demonstrating reasonable progress toward the attainment of accreditation. However, candidacy status does not indicate accredited status nor does it guarantee eventual accreditation. To achieve candidacy status a program must meet the minimum requirements for achieving and maintaining accredited status except for “Faculty instructional full-time equivalence.” (See Standards and Procedures document, page 8). However, to apply for initial accreditation, the minimum faculty requirements must be met.
Step 1 – Chief executive officer of institution submits letter to LAAB stating its intent to apply for candidacy status along with $500 application fee. Step 2 – LAAB accreditation manager contacts program administrator to determine schedule for program to submit a Candidacy Status self-evaluation report and undergo a program review. Step 3 – Date for program review and program reviewer are confirmed. Step 4 – Self-evaluation report is received by LAAB 60 days prior to program review** schedule. Step 5 – One person program review to institution Step 6 Program reviewer submits report to institution and to LAAB. Step 7 Program submits a response to program review report to LAAB. Step 8 LAAB reviews programs self-evaluation report, program review report and institution’s response to program review report and makes decision on whether to award candidacy status. After achieving Candidacy status a program must submit an annual progress report to LAAB by June 15 describing the program’s development and progress it is making towards meeting accreditation requirements. LAAB will review the annual progress reports to determine if the program’s candidacy status should be continued. A Candidacy status program must apply for initial accreditation within 12 months of its first graduating class. If initial accreditation is not granted, the program may retain its candidacy status for one year. ** Program Review – see Accreditation Standards and Procedures document, page 21. Approved at March 19-20, 2004 LAAB meeting |
