The scale of natural destruction and personal
tragedy caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita is seared into
the nation's consciousness. While attention is properly focused
on the Gulf Coast, every region of the country is vulnerable
to destructive natural disasters. The American Society of
Landscape Architects is committed to making communities and
families across the country safer by strengthening natural
defenses, mitigating hazardous conditions, and improving planning
