I don't have the words to express how genuinely enthused I am to begin my service as your next president in October. I strongly believe in personal
and collective service as a means of realizing our best aims for the profession. As the
2003 fiscal year approaches, it will be my honor to request service at the national level
from members of the Society.
Each year, I've watched as the president-elect sought to advance our
collective goals by providing continuity, fresh perspectives, and engaging
energy to critical areas through the appointments to
our key committees and task forces. This has been and continues to
be a meaningful way for each of us to contribute a limited, but important,
measure of our personal time to each other, in the process making a
direct, immediate, lasting, impact on the direction of ASLA and the
future of the profession.
I have personally had the opportunity to serve on many committees and task
forces. In each case, I can look back on an enjoyable
and rewarding experience. At times it has been difficult, challenging, and a bit of a
personal stretch. All the while, it carried me further along in my
personal and professional development. It
has made it possible for me to learn and grow in so many ways I could not have
realized through any other means.
The decision to serve does not come easily, nor by happenstance. It is an
active choice that requires personal sacrifice. For that, I
say thank you to all who have done so, because I have been a beneficiary of
your effort.
Recently, you were notified through LAND Online of the upcoming process.
First, for each of you actively in service at the national level, I want to
extend a personal request that you consider continued service on a
committee or task force. Secondly, for chapter presidents, the most
important thing you may be able to do is ask others in your chapter to
express their interest in serving at the national level. And for those of you
who have volunteered in the past, please consider the invaluable contribution
you would make by merging your experience and sage advice
with other energetic and visionary voices.
The ASLA committees listed below are available for new member participation
during my term as president (October 22, 2002 - November 3, 2003). If you
would like to participate on one or more of these committees, please contact

to have appointments completed in time for all 2003 members to be
notified and attend the 2002 committee and task force final
meetings at our October Annual Meeting in San Jose as observers.
With best regards,
Paul F. Morris, FASLA
President-Elect
