Designing the Parks

This two-part conference will meet for three days in Charlottesville, Virginia (May 20-22, 2008) and three days in San Francisco (Dec 9-11, 2008). In Charlottesville the meeting will be hosted by the University of Virginia and the papers presented will address the history of the planning and design of regional, state, and national parks. The San Francisco meeting, which will be held at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, will explore current issues and future trends in park planning and design, building on the research presented the Charlottesville meeting.

At both meetings, participants will include architects and landscape architects, historians, scientists, national and state park managers, partnership organizations, and others involved in park research, design, and management. Many types of landscape reservations will be the subjects of papers and presentations at both meetings of Designing the Parks, including but not limited to scenic and wilderness reservations, historical and archeological parks, ethnographic and memorial sites, national heritage areas, and protected landscapes of all types. The Charlottesville and San Francisco meetings of Designing the Parks will be linked in terms of content, themes, participants, and mutual relevance.

The purpose of the Charlottesville session is to assess lessons learned through an examination of park planning and design history. The research presented will provide a foundation for presentations and workshops addressing the unique challenges facing current park design and management, which will be the subjects of the San Francisco meeting of the conference. Both meetings of Designing the Parks will also stand independently for those attending one or the other of the meetings.

The conference is cosponsored by the National Park Service, The Cultural Landscape Foundation, the University of Virginia, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the National Parks Conservation Association, and the George Wright Society.

National Endowment for the Arts' Grants in Design

The NEA’s Access to Artistic Excellence stewardship grants are part of an outreach effort by NEA's Design Division to try and help "render visible" the high caliber of design initiatives that the NEA supports. The winners are noteworthy in part because of the wide variety of ways they propose to protect, share, and celebrate our collective design heritage.

Over the years Design at the NEA has supported many projects proposed by the discipline of landscape architecture. Landscape architecture is often “the point of entry” for communities trying to protect threatened landscapes and contested public realms. Despite this reality, this year there were no recommended projects in landscape architecture. ASLA members are encouraged to submit worthwhile landscape design initiatives across the country that would benefit from NEA support.

The Access to Artistic Excellence stewardship grants in design deadline for 2009 is August 11, 2008. Stewardship refers to projects that protect, share, or celebrate our collective design heritage. These include, among others:

Historic preservation activities.
The exhibition and publication of the design of the past.
Education and outreach that bring established design practices to American communities.
Conferences, symposia, and other gatherings that promote the heritage and conservation of design.

Rome Prize 2009

The American Academy in Rome offers fellowships for periods ranging from six months to 2 years.

Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy's center in Rome and receive room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend. Stipends for six-month fellowships are $12,500, and stipends for 11-month fellowships are $25,000.

Fellowships are awarded in the following related fields:

- Architecture

- Design (including graphic, fashion, industrial, interior, lighting, set, and sound design, engineering, urban planning, and other related design fields)

- Historic Preservation and Conservation (including architectural design, public policy, and the conservation of works of art)

- Landscape Architecture.

Fellowships are also awarded in: Musical Composition and Visual Arts. In the field of humanities, we award fellowships in Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Modern Italian Studies.

Call for Papers: VAF 2009 Annual Meeting in Butte, Montana

The Vernacular Architecture Forum (http://www.vafweb.org) invites paper proposals for its Annual Meeting in Butte, Montana, June 10-13, 2009. Papers may address vernacular and everyday buildings, sites, or cultural landscapes worldwide. Submissions are encouraged to explore topics related to the conference theme, such as industrial boomtowns in the American West, mining landscapes, cultural landscapes and architecture of farming, cattle ranching and livestock breeding, and company towns. Also encouraged are proposals for complete sessions, roundtable discussions, and any innovative means that facilitate scholarly discourse.

Deadline: October 1, 2008.

Proposals may be for a twenty-minute paper or for a ten-minute “work in progress” presentation. Proposals must: be one-page; be fewer than 400 words; include paper title, author’s name, and email address. Also send a one-page CV.

Presenter’s Fellowships are available to students and young professionals.

Boston Harbor Island Alliance Is Seeking Proposals

The Boston Harbor Island Alliance is seeking proposals from qualified teams to design the Harbor Park Pavilion, a visitor facility to be built within the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston.

The selected team will include one or more experienced landscape architects, architects, and exhibit designers, as well as other required disciplines. Principals must be prepared to participate in multiple local meetings, work sessions, and presentations, so an office in greater Boston is essential.

A joint project of the Island Alliance and the National Park Service, the pavilion will be a gateway to the Boston Harbor Islands national park area. Proposals are due by July 21, 2008. Feasibility Study & Engineering Design - Legacy Trail Project

The Lexington-Fayette (Ky.) Urban County Government (LFUCG) is accepting proposals from qualified firms for professional engineering and/or landscape architectural services to conduct a feasibility study and engineering design for a shared use trail known as the Legacy Trail. The study is for the entire trail and the design is for a portion of the trail.

Consultants must have the necessary experience, such as civil and structural engineering, hydraulic engineering, and landscape architecture, to assist the LFUCG in creating a linear park environment. They must also have a proven history of successful linear park/greenway projects.

The deadline for submitting proposals is 2:00 PM EST on July 25, 2008.

Creating Home Outside

Award-winning author, lecturer and designer Julie Moir Messervy, Affiliate ASLA, today announced that she will host a daylong landscape design workshop on Saturday, August 23, 2008, near her Vermont-based studio.

The workshop, titled “Creating Home Outside,” combines Messervy’s signature design process with a preview of the practical information and techniques from her upcoming book, Home Outside (Taunton Press, January 2009). The workshop is for homeowners and professionals alike and combines lectures, images and instructive diagrams to illustrate outdoor space organization, address design challenges, and allow participants to create “Home Outside” on their own or their client’s land.

The picturesque southeastern Vermont location presents the perfect setting for Messervy to take participants on a journey through her design process. In the workshop, Messervy teaches participants how to create places of beauty and meaning through her clear and manageable process. Encouraging homeowners and other designers to move past their preconceived notions of landscape design, Messervy teaches them to transform properties into cohesive and personal landscapes.

The workshop takes place at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt. Registration is $115 for general admission, $85 for Vermont residents, $65 for seniors and students and includes lunch. The Second Wave of Modernism in Landscape Architecture in America

The terms “modern” and “minimal” are casually applied to public landscapes and gardens today without any deep understanding of what makes them Modern.

If the first wave of Modernism in landscape architecture began in 1929 with Fletcher Steele’s revolutionary application of a bent axis at the Camden Amphitheatre in Maine and quietly ended on the Bicentennial (July 4, 1976) with the ribbon-cutting of such projects as Lawrence Halprin’s Freeway Park in Seattle and Heritage Park in Fort Worth; Hideo Sasaki’s Waterfront Park in Boston; Robert Zion’s Waterfront Park in Cincinnati; and SOM’s design for Constitution Gardens in Washington, D.C., what happened in Landscape Architecture after that? Unlike architecture, which experienced a two-decade romance with Post Modernism, the same did not occur in the landscape architecture profession.

This conference will explore this question by showcasing the ideas and works of leading landscape architecture and garden design professionals to see what makes their work Modern and how it is influenced by the earlier movement. The nationally and internationally-celebrated speakers include landscape architects M. Paul Friedberg (New York City); Kathryn Gustafson (Seattle); Walter Hood (Berkeley); Tom Oslund (Minneapolis); Doug Reed (Cambridge); Mark Rios (Los Angeles); Peter Lindsay Schaudt (Chicago); Martha Schwartz (Cambridge); Ken Smith (New York City): Michael Van Valkenburgh (New York City); and Thomas Woltz (Charlottesville).

The conference will open Thursday evening, November 13, with a dinner and keynote address by M. Paul Friedberg. The conference sessions will be held on Friday, November 14 at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The day will conclude with a reception at the Design Within Reach studio on East Ohio Street. Tours will be held on Saturday, November 15 and will spotlight the work of Dan Kiley, Kathryn Gustafson, Michael Van Valkenburgh, and Peter Lindsay Schaudt among others.
