Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The “Natural Spaces, Public Places” Annual Meeting theme certainly gave us a lot to talk about in Salt Lake City. As we close the 2004 annual meeting I would like to again thank the many people whose personal effort and commitment went into planning, organizing, and delivering this wonderful conference. The leadership of our Steering Committee co-chairs, Barry Warner, FASLA, and Jeff Bruce, FASLA, the Utah Chapter, and the dedicated performance of our ASLA staff all combined to create a successful meeting.

Our keynote speakers, Terry Tempest Williams, Steve Uzzell, Grant Jones, FASLA, and Peter Walker, FASLA, helped us focus on our theme and opened our eyes to new possibilities. The bright and colorful expo provided a wide array of information from exhibitors for all practitioners. The education program provided attendees with 62 sessions divided into eight different focus areas. The western hospitality was fabulous at the Golden Spike Gala as well as at the many tours and events put on by the host chapter.

We were also able to bestow honors on many distinguished individuals at the meeting as we celebrated the profession. Thirty-two new fellows were invested, the professional and student awards were presented, and the Society’s medals were given.

As we look ahead to 2005, I hope that you all will be able to draw upon the information gathered, contacts made, and lessons learned in Salt Lake City. I also hope that your volunteer spirit was renewed and will encourage you to volunteer either in your own chapter or on a national committee during the next year. The Salt Lake City annual meeting was a special one for me and I appreciate those of you who helped make it a great meeting. I look forward to seeing you again on October 7-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as we explore the “Winds of Change: Keys of the Future.”

Warmest Regards,
