Public Landscape Architecture Forum
3:00pm-5:00pm
What is the landscape architect’s role in defining the public realm?
Public, nonprofit, and private practice landscape architects who are involved
in works of public landscape architecture are invited to attend this session.
The two-hour forum is organized by the ASLA Public Practice Advisory Committee
to discuss issues relevant to participation in this realm.
The forum will open with a half hour of networking and socializing. Mayor
Keith Villere, FASLA (Mayor of Covington, Louisiana) will provide welcoming
comments to the group with an emphasis on the value of public landscape
architecture from the local government perspective. This will be followed
by an introduction to the topic of landscape architecture in the public
realm by Amy Schneckenburger, ASLA. The keynote speaker, the Honorable
Robert Weygand, FASLA, will discuss the value and significance of public
landscape architecture. Weygand’s remarks will address the nature
of working in the public realm and the effective application of landscape
architects’ skills in producing quality works. Weygand is the only
landscape architect to ever serve in elected public office on both the
state and Federal levels. As a former state representative, lieutenant
governor and United States Congressman from Rhode Island, Weygand provides
a unique perspective on the role of public landscape architecture. After
his presentation, he will participate in a question-and-answer session
with attendees.
Robert Weygand, FASLA, is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island
and is a landscape architect by profession. His career in public service
began in 1978 with the East Providence Planning Board, followed by four
terms in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. He went on to win
election as lieutenant governor of Rhode Island and became chairman of
the Rhode Island Small Business Advocacy Council. Weygand was elected
to the U.S. House in 1996 to represent the state's 2nd Congressional District.
Robert Weygand is currently the president and CEO of the New England Board
of Higher Education. Keith Villere, FASLA, graduated from Louisiana State
University in 1978. He has served three terms as mayor of Covington, Louisiana,
and was responsible for drafting the first landscape ordinance in that
state. He has lectured extensively on urban forestry and urban planning.
Amy Schneckenburger, ASLA, works for the National Park Service and currently
serves as ASLA’s vice president for public affairs.
