2002 ASLA Annual Meeting & EXPO

San José is a confident and exciting city, full of optimism and opportunity. We treasure our past. We embrace our diversity. We nurture our future, in our children and through stewardship of our resources.

The NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER OF THE ASLA is honored to host this year's ASLA Annual Meeting & EXPO in San José. To help serve your needs we are conveniently located at the lower level lobby across from the Registration area. We are there to help you make the most of your visit to the "hub" of Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area.

We are fortunate this year that the Chapter is able to offer an ASLA 2002 ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE POSTER. Bay area Landscape Architect, Artist, and ASLA Fellow-Elect; Ron Wigginton, ASLA, graciously donated his artwork and had the posters produced for the Chapter at trade cost to commemorate this event. Sales of the posters will assist in recouping some of the Host Chapter expenses. The piece, titled "Silicon Sky" is one of two 10' by 14' paintings on canvas Ron created in 1998. The image of a "Silicon Valley" landscape contrasts contemporary man-made technology and iconography with earth and sky... man-made form and geometry in a matrix of nature. These large-scale paintings were commissioned by Mr. Wigginton's client David House who was responsible for the "Intel Inside" logo and the development of Intel microprocessors from the 386 chip through the Pentium II. Mr. House has donated the companion painting "Silicon Sea" to the Computer History Museum where it will become the centerpiece of its new building in Sunnyvale, California. The 24" x 36" full color posters are priced at $15.00 plus $5 shipping for advance orders prior to the meeting. A limited number of signed copies will be made available. Don't miss our CHAPTER DEMONSTRATION PROJECT featuring one of the first cooperative design workshops between the National Park Service and ASLA entitled: "Embrace The River - A Design Charette for the the San Lorenzo River and Branciforte Creek". The ASLA/NPS workshop took place January of 2002 in Santa Cruz, California, included representatives from the City of Santa Cruz and the local community focusing on the conceptual redevelopment of the San Lorenzo Riverfront in Santa Cruz and it's connections to the downtown area. Please be sure to stop by and see the results of our public workshops and volunteer efforts. A display will be set up near the Host Chapter Booth.

San José has become a popular destination for both tourists and business travelers. The Northern California Chapter is here to help take the guesswork out of your stay and to assist you in finding out what the City's revitalized downtown area has to offer. The downtown area and surrounds exhibit many world-class urban spaces and beckons visitors to enjoy the many fine restaurants and shops. Be sure to venture into historic San Pedro Square for dinner and visit the Tech Museum for a look into the future.

Enjoy the magic of beautiful Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay area.
