LARE Review Session for Providers
Introductory
Since the UNE was revamped to become the LARE, state chapters and schools
have had a difficult time keeping up with the frequent changes to the
LARE for their review sessions. This workshop is intended to refresh existing
review sessions with the latest information from CLARB, the ASLA Continuing
Education Program, and the ASLA LARE Preparation Committee. State chapters
and university programs should identify people who, with training from
the ASLA, can manage review sessions as a service to entry-level practitioners
and to support licensure efforts. Contact your ASLA state chapter president
if you are interested in being sponsored to attend this important information
packed workshop! Sponsorship is not required, but this is an opportunity
for chapters to coordinate their own or regional review sessions. Anyone
committed to providing the best and most accurate information to LARE
candidates should attend to get the training from members of the LARE
Preparation Committee, and to observe the concurrent LARE Review Session.
For more information regarding this session, please contact: virginia.russell@uc.edu.
Learning Outcomes:
- State chapters that currently provide review sessions will send their
instructors for up-to-date and uniformly accurate information about
the exam and the ASLA's Continuing Education quality standards. State
chapters that have stopped offering this service will receive information,
support and resources to offer review sessions.
- LARE Preparation Committee members will form relationships with providers
who can contribute to the committee's efforts
- Attendees will be trained in the administration of LARE Review Sessions
to meet the LARE Preparation Committee's goal to discourage misinformation
and pour quality review sessions, and to coordinate all ASLA chapter
review sessions under the ASLA Continuing Education Program and its
quality standards.
Virginia L. Russell, FASLA, was ASLA Vice President of Membership when
she created the ASLA LARE Preparation Committee. She has taught LARE review
sessions and advised LARE candidates all over the US since 1989. She is
the editor and co-author of the ASLA book, LARE: A Guide for Professional
Development. Sara Katherine Williams, FASLA, is an Associate Professor
of Landscape Architecture at the University of Florida and co-author of
the ASLA book, LARE: A Guide to Professional Development. E. Neal Weatherly,
Jr., FASLA, is a Professor of Landscape Architecture in the school of
Environmental Design at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. David
B. Nichols, ASLA, is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture
in the School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia in
Athens. Jim T. Penrod, ASLA, is the Director of Examinations for the Council
of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB). $120
per person. Lunch on own.

LARE Review Session for Candidates
Introductory
This workshop will give candidates an opportunity to take the most difficult
sections of the LARE under simulated exam conditions, with feedback to
identify each candidate's strengths and weaknesses. This review session
was developed as a national model with input from exam candidates and
review session instructors from all over the country, and enrollment will
be limited to insure plenty of one-on-one assistance. Members of the ASLA
LARE Preparation Committee, who wrote the book LARE: A Guide to Professional
Development (ASLA Press, 1999), and guest instructors will give candidates
step-by-step strategies for exam success. Participants will be expected
to bring their own simple kit of drafting equipment and a calculator.
Performance problems and handouts will be provided. Don't miss this chance
to get the best expert coaching available! For more information regarding
this session, please contact: virginia.russell@uc.edu.
Learning Outcomes:
- Candidates will receive an overview of the objective and performance
sections of the LARE, their basis in the CLARB Task Analysis, and the
evaluation criteria for each section.
- Candidates will receive instruction in stress reduction techniques,
the examination and evaluation environments, and studying tips and resources.
- Candidates will take practice performance and receive performance
evaluation and feedback in a method that simulates the examination environment.

The Design Sense Of Geospatial Technologies
Introductory
Landscape architects must avail themselves of digital technologies or
forfeit major portions of the designer's market. It is no longer true
that digital technologies are for planning and not design, that they are
only for large tracts of land, or that the results do not justify the
costs. Digital technologies are the standard that most public clients
demand and private clients are coming to appreciate. GIS has come a long
way in its analytical capabilities, in its graphic displays, in its portability
to other applications and in the ease of acquiring reliable data.
This day-long workshop will demonstrate the digital approaches that
six professional firms have used in their work. In every case, the product
is different than it would have been using strictly manual methods. In
some examples digital and manual methods are combined for the best of
both. The workshop is designed for an introductory audience, to promote
an understanding of digital technologies, especially geographic information
systems. For more information regarding this session, please contact:
kchanna@cc.usu.edu.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding of GIS capabilities, especially in site design.
- Benefits and pitfalls of using digital technologies.
- The costs and staffing requirements for using GIS.
Karen Hanna, ASLA, is Professor and Department Head of Landscape Architecture
and Environmental Planning at Utah State University. She has written two
books on geographic information systems titled, "GIS in Site Design" published
by John Wiley & Sons and "GIS for Landscape Architects" published
by ESRI Press. Other presenters include: George Radnovich, ASLA, of Sites
Southwest in Albuquerque, NM; Robert Bristol, FASLA, and Marcia Finney,
of Saratoga Associates in Saratoga, NY; Graciella Carrichia of WRT in
Lake Placid, NY; Mark Carpenter of KTU + A in San Diego, CA; Steve Mullen,
Community Vis; and Sharen Hauri, Associate ASLA, of Swaner Design, LLC,
in Salt Lake City, UT. $120 per person. Lunch on own.
