New Report: Office Workers More Prone to Blood Clots
And now, a public service announcement for LAs crouched at their desks, chained to CAD:
The AP reports today that a new New Zealand medical study of office workers found that seated workers are more prone to suffer from deep-vein thrombosis, or DVT. Deep-vein thrombosis, which causes blood clots to form in the legs of people who are seated for long periods of time, can be fatal. You may remember that DVT caused the death of NBC reporter David Bloom in 2003. Bloom had been seated for a long time in a cramped military vehicle.
Sounds like DVT is no longer just the "economy-class syndrome." Make sure that you don't spend all day seated at your desk, staring at your computer. Instead, get up every hour or so, stretch, and walk around. The FDA has some more advice here. There are also office solutions that allow workers to stand at their desks (full disclosure: The Dirt stands at his desk, using the homemade keyboard stand shown above). Or, even better: go outside and enjoy the early spring landscape!
