Will Delcambre Come Back?
The Daily Advertiser (Acadiana, Louisiana) looks at the town of Delcambre, Louisiana, as it struggles to rebound after Hurricane Rita. This is worth a read, as it provides a snapshot of what towns outside of Louisiana are facing as they continue to try to rebuild--namely isolation, increased regulation, attempts to rebuild infrastructure, and the prospect of residents simply not returning. According to Mayor Carol Broussard, 75 percent of the town's residents have returned--seemingly good numbers, but not enough to keep the town from having to raise water and sewage bills. The primary concern of Delcambre seems to be isolation, however, as several residents complain that community feelings simply don't exist anymore. To help alleviate that, LSU landscape architecture students and members of the school's Sea Grant program recently unveiled redevelopment proposals with "an emphasis on preserving culture, promoting recreational activities and improving the town's infrastructure."
