New Green Roof Education Page Launched
"The Roof Is Growing" educational site is targeted to middle school science students and educators.
Earlier this month, a new resource for green roof education launched at ASLA.org. Called “The Roof Is Growing,” this new website teaches middle school science students all about green roofs and protecting the environment. The ASLA Green Roof Education Program is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a generous contribution from the landscape architecture firm Lewis Scully Gionet, Inc.
“The Roof is Growing” site covers four major benefits of green roof technology:
- reducing urban heat island effect
- managing stormwater
- creating/replacing habitat for wildlife in urban areas
- cleaning the air
The interactive resources online include Flash movies, a 360-degree virtual tour of the roof, workbooks, and more. There is also a curriculum guide and printable information and handouts for educators.
Members are encouraged to use the green roof site when visiting classrooms and student groups. It is a perfect companion to the ASLA career discovery brochures (in English and Spanish) and PowerPoint presentation on careers in landscape architecture. Download the career discovery brochures here and visit “The Roof Is Growing” here.
