ASLA Members Receive Discount on Royston Tour
"Roystonland Rediscovered" spotlights the significant work of Robert Royston, FASLA.
The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) has announced that its inaugural “Pioneers of American Landscape Design Garden Excursion” will feature the work of Robert Royston, FASLA. Cosponsored by ASLA, Garden Design magazine, and Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey, this two-day California excursion offers a rare opportunity to spend time with a landscape architecture legend whose career spans more than half a century.
In celebration of Royston’s 90th birthday, TCLF has arranged a “curated” tour on May 9 and 10 offering a unique chance to visit and learn about a variety of Royston’s lesser-known public and private landscapes. And, as many of these private gardens are in the hands of the original owners, this may well prove to be a final occasion to see them intact before major alterations are made. Royston’s biographer, J.C. Miller, will lead the tour, joined by Royston himself.
The event will begin with an enlightening overview of Royston’s work followed by a tour of some of his most innovative commissions in the Santa Clara, Richmond, Palo Alto, and Mill Valley areas. Capping the experience, participants will embark on a rare private visit to Royston’s own extraordinary garden, which will include a reception on his cantilevered deck that overlooks Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley.
This intimate opportunity is limited to 24 people. ASLA members receive 20 percent off the regular price of $1,000 (ticket cost: $800). Fully tax-deductible tickets will benefit the production of TCLF’s Oral History module dedicated to the life and legacy of Robert Royston.
