National Landscape Architecture Month Begins
Many chapters will feature multiple events throughout the month of April to highlight the importance of landscape architecture.

More than 35 ASLA chapters have plans to highlight various aspects of landscape architecture during National Landscape Architecture Month. The theme for the month, “Discover Landscape Architecture,” focuses on careers in the field. The month encompasses Earth Day on April 22 and the birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted on April 26, who founded the American landscape architecture profession. Across the country, landscape architects have scheduled events with schools, universities, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, as well as National Parks to explore all aspects of the profession.  To keep members informed of these events and more, ASLA has compiled a list of chapter events on the 2008 NLAM web page.

The month also encompasses the “Each One, Reach One” Campaign by President Perry Howard, FASLA. The campaign charges all 18,000 members to reach out to at least one K-12 student about landscape architecture. Nationally, ASLA is working with former NFL pro-bowl running back and landscape architect Eddie George, ASLA, to highlight career opportunities.
Below are some highlights from the local chapter events that will reach out to school-age children in April:

Louisiana Chapter
Design and Installation of Bioswales and wetland Area at Episcopal High School
Baton Rouge, LA

A series of bioswales and wetland area will be installed in the main courtyard at Episcopal High School to solve drainage and water quality issues and also as a site for teaching. EHS science teachers are developing courses to take advantage of BMP installation, operation, and maintenance.

Nevada Chapter
Discover Careers in Landscape Architecture Flyer Contest

The chapter is holding a contest for a flyer design depicting “Discover Careers in Landscape Architecture.” The contest will be open to members and student chapters. Once a winner is selected the flyer will be displayed in locations such as libraries, nurseries, boys/girls clubs, and community centers for the entire month of April.

New Mexico Chapter
School to World

The New Mexico Chapter will have a booth at the largest career event in New Mexico focusing on 8th and 9th grade students. Chapter members will be handing out Career Discovery brochures and fielding questions from intrigued students. In addition, they will be showing the showing the Career Discovery PowerPoint and a presentation of projects that the New Mexico Chapter has completed, and have a “Design Your Own Park” station where students can produce their own plans and take them home to share with family and friends.
