The Cultural Landscape Foundation Hosts the Inaugural Pioneers of American Landscape Design Garden Excursion: Celebrating the Modernist Parks and Gardens of Robert Royston
The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) has announced that the first Pioneers of American Landscape Design Garden Excursion will place a spotlight on the work of Robert Royston, FASLA. The two-day, “curated” tour will offer a unique opportunity to visit and learn about a variety of lesser-know and astonishing public and private landscapes by one of California’s pioneering Post-War landscape architects, Robert Royston. The tour will be led by Royston biographer, J.C. Miller, along with Royston himself. This inaugural Garden Excursion will take place in Northern California from May 9-10, 2008

The event will begin with an enlightening overview of Mr. Royston’s work before attendees tour of some of Royston’s most innovative public and private commissions in the Santa Clara, Richmond, Palo Alto, and Mill Valley areas. Capping out the experience, the tour will conclude with a rare private visit to Mr. Royston’s own extraordinary garden which will include a reception on his cantilevered deck that overlooks Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley.

About Robert Royston
Robert Royston has designed hundreds of parks and gardens over a career that spans his more than half a century of work. As one of the original group of practicing postwar California landscape architects, his projects reveal and reflect the Modernist vocabulary of this period. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, educated at the University of California at Berkeley, his astonishing career has included professional practice with Thomas Church, Garrett Eckbo and Ed Williams and others. Robert Royston’s firm, Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey has been active since 1979. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including the American Society of Landscape Architects Medal in 1989 — the highest honor bestowed by the Society. He is an emeritus principal at Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey and is active on a variety of projects. He has recently worked as a consultant to the City of Palo Alto, California, on the renovation of Mitchell Park. Presently, Royston is collaborating with J.C. Miller on a garden in Palm Springs, California. He will turn 90 in 2008.
